      In the opinion of many people, it now appears that Microsoft's new release of their Xbox 360 Slim (as it's unofficial nickname) or Xbox 360 as its Official status is what's known as a smart but pointless release. In terms of it's new design the 'New Xbox 360 has really come upmarket it an attractive way, the new sleek design really does make it a proud member of your Entertainment Area and boosts that professional look, but it's Piano Black finish really does become an ''A class'' finger magnet and after polish disintegrates the delicate finish leaving small but somewhat annoying petite scratches. However these are only visible in direct sunlight and where direct light does not face the Xbox those marks fade away. Microsoft have clearly focused on all aspects of designing the New Xbox 360 and its new power button becomes an elegant sight when light is reflected on it. The rearrangement of the USB 2.0 slots have been rotated to face vertically which makes it easier to access them. Adjacent to this is the controller sync buttuon which is now larger as result making it easier to operate.
     At the rear of the console there is the normal Network cable and HDMI cable composite video. Newly installed however, is the new port for Microsoft's Kinect, which will disable the need for an adapter which earlier releases will need. Also 3 USB 2.0 slots have been fitted for maximum use with controllers and data mass storage devices. Microsoft have clearly listened to users and as a result have fitted and Optical audio cable separate from its past place on the Composite cable. The power cable has also been replaced to a new version. The exterior power supply has also been changed it's grill reduced but not greatly changed no longer being shiny.
     To the side of the Xbox the grill has become bigger and has become very sleef in terms of looks. It is now larger and this enables for heat to be dispersed from the system while it operates. This helps but not drastically as it seems that after 10 minutes of play the system still seems to heat up. On inspection however it is clear that more heat is being removed than its earlier predecessors and as result making it cooler but not drastically.

The Xbox 360 is a top-of-the-line gaming system, but it's not terribly impressive when there is no picture on the Xbox 360 that you own. I mean, after all, video is what it is all about. Unfortunately, once in a while Xbox 360 gamers are face with the problem of no video. Overheating, as with so many other Xbox 360 problems, seems to be the culprit here. The Xbox 360 has a lot of advanced electronics packed into a small console. There is little available extra space, and consequently, just barely enough room for good air circulation. Sometimes, after a long playing session, the heat buildup is enough to have you end up with the Xbox 360 no picture problem.

Generally, the Xbox 360 no picture problem is temporary. If you shut down the system and give it some time to cool off, about an hour should do it, it should run perfectly when you turn it back on. If you don't overheat it again, the video will be fine. If you overheat it again, you'll be sure to have the same problem. It's not a serious flaw in the system, but it is irritating to the avid gamer.

It appears that when the system overheats, special clamps that attach the graphic processor unit to the motherboard overheat and become loosened. They get so loose that the graphic processor becomes electronically detached from the motherboard circuitry and stops functioning, leaving you with the realization your Xbox 360 has no picture. If the problem persists, regardless of how you try to stop it, you might be left with no alternative but to send the system back to a Microsoft repair center for repairs. Before you take that ultimate step, however, try improving the air flow to your console. Make sure that it is not located in a closed in area with little air flow. Don't place it next to any other heat generating electronic equipment. Setting it next to an open window in good weather is also a help. Don't overlook the benefit of having a small table fan blowing a constant cooling breeze over the console.

I have been playing the game for the past 5 hours or so and wanted to get a quick review out, will try to follow up with more. First of all, to the negative reviewers. . . the reason that the game is less than $40 is because they intentionally left things like SX out of it so that they could keep working on them and sell them as DLC. Same with real bikes, Suzuki, Yamaha and KTM will all be available to download soon for a few Microsoft Points. This is by design. Honda and Kawasaki don't seem to be included in future downloads, maybe they couldn't work out licensing. Also, if you are complaining about not being able to whip, scrub, etc. it is because you still have the stock frame and need to keep playing to unlock (or pay the 480 Microsoft points to unlock all upgrades).

This game takes everything that kept me playing MX vs ATV Reflex for the past year and added real world riders, nearly photorealistic environments, better sound, better collisions (bar banging) and tons of upcoming DLC for things like SX and real bikes. No, I am not fooled, I will absolutely end up paying full price for the game after getting all the DLC. . . but for someone who doesn't want SX or care about real bikes, then they will save some money. I have watched a lot of SX and MX on Speed over the past year or two, and it is very cool to ride against real riders rather than the random computer generated (non-persistent?) AI riders in Reflex.

There a few negatives, but not many. For example, out of the box there don't seem to be any points series, but I assume that you will download those. Also, you start with most of the good stuff locked and need to play for a few hours to level up. This is no different than Gran Turismo, etc. and to me adds to the enjoyment of the game. By the time I have unlocked the good stuff, I will be much better at the game. It is a little harder to crash in Alive than it was in Reflex, but that is not a bad thing. Neither is the bike on rails though, it feels fairly well balanced overall.

I am ok with giving this game a 5 for fun and overall because the predecessor was one of the few games I played for a full year after I bought it and this one (after 5 hours) takes all the things I enjoyed about the previous one and adds more.

Research of In-game ads backfire in violent games

University of Texas research indicates gamers have significantly worse recollection, perception of brands advertised in guns-and-gore software.

Save for a few rare instances, gamers haven't been keen on seeing real-world advertisements populate their fantasy adventures. However, that dislike may amount to more than just a minor irritation when it comes to violent games. According to a new research study, ads that appear in violent games actually have a detrimental effect on the brand being sold.

Conducted at the University of Texas, the study was authored by doctoral candidate Seung-Chul Yoo and assistant professor Jorge Pena. It will appear in the July/August issue of Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking and is said to be the first to link "increased video game violence and impaired in-game ad effectiveness."

Two groups participated in the study. The first group navigated a number of rooms that included blood spots on the floor, while being assailed by computer-controlled characters wielding weapons. The second group was presented with a nonviolent take on the same situation, with players walking through rooms with water spots and encountering empty-handed computer-controlled characters. In the violent version of the scenario, participants were also wielding weapons.

[CORRECTION:] This article originally reported that participants in the study observed, but did not interact with, the violent and nonviolent imagery onscreen. In actuality, participants controlled a character that was either being shot at in the blood-soaked environments or not being shot at in identical water-soaked rooms. GameSpot regrets the error.

After the demo ended, participants were asked to recall the brands advertised as well as relate their perceptions of those brands. The study found that those who witnessed the violent scenario had a significantly lower score when it came to brand recall and perception.

Women in particular had a negative response to the violent game. Study authors postulated the reason for this as being that women typically have less experience with violent games or that men who more often play these types of games have become desensitized to the violence.

Yoo and Pena concluded that violent content not only pulls players' attention away from ads, but also creates a subconscious link between negative imagery and the brand. They said that a similar effect has been observed in violent television programs as compared to nonviolent TV shows.

"Advertising campaign planners would do better to spend their budget on ads embedded in nonviolent video games than in ads placed within violent video games; particularly if they are trying to reach women," said Yoo.

Apple Shares Drop After Steve Jobs Resigns

Apple Inc. (AAPL) shares declined after the resignation of Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs, who transformed the company he started at age 21 from a personal- computer also-ran into the world’s largest technology company.

The shares fell as much as 7 percent in extended trading in the U.S. yesterday after the announcement. Jobs, who will become chairman, was on medical leave since Jan. 17, following a 2003 cancer diagnosis and a liver transplant in 2009. He is succeeded by Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook, 50, who has been running day-to-day operations.

“I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know,” Jobs, 56, said in a statement yesterday. “Unfortunately, that day has come.”

Under Jobs, Apple became the second-most valuable company in the world, after Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM), by introducing devices that revolutionized the computer, music and mobile phone industries. Jobs left Cook at the helm when he was on leave in the first half of 2009, and Cook built confidence with investors during that stint, when the shares gained about 70 percent.

“You can expect that it’s going to take a hit,” said Kenneth Polcari, a managing director at ICAP Corporates, in an interview with Bloomberg Television. “After it all settles down, people are going to realize that Apple is not a company that didn’t have a plan in place, that didn’t realize at some point this was going to happen.”

Apple dropped as low as $350 following the announcement, after rising $2.58 to $376.18 at 4 p.m. New York time on the Nasdaq Stock Market.
Jobs’s Legacy

‘Extraordinary Vision’

Jobs told the board he intends to be an active chairman, and he held an emotional meeting with his executive team afterward, according to another person familiar with the matter.

“Steve’s extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world’s most innovative and valuable technology company,” Art Levinson, an Apple director, said in a statement on behalf of the board. “Steve has made countless contributions to Apple’s success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple’s immensely creative employees and world class executive team.”

Jobs was ousted by the board in 1985 amid differences over strategy. In his time away, Jobs ran movie animation studio Pixar, which he later sold to Walt Disney Co., as well as NeXT Software Inc., a company Apple acquired to return him to the company. Jobs is Disney’s largest shareholder, with a 7.4 percent stake. He will remain on the entertainment company’s board, a person with knowledge of the matter said.

When Jobs returned in 1997, Apple had run up $1.86 billion in losses over two years. It was 90 days away from bankruptcy, Jobs would later say.
Stock Surge

Apple stock surged 9,020 percent since July 29, 1997, the day before the San Francisco Chronicle broke news that Jobs would be interim CEO. Over that period, the market value rose to $348.7 billion from $2.06 billion.

Any slump in the shares may be short lived, said Daniel Genter, who oversees about $3.7 billion as president of Los Angeles-based RNC Genter Capital Management.

“Jobs has been a strong figure in the company historically, but he hasn’t been a driving force for the past two years,” said Genter. “It brings clarity. It shouldn’t have an effect on the overall market, but this market is so skittish so it may have a short-term negative impact.”

Since his return, Jobs has led Apple’s transformation into a seller of everything from smartphones to music. He engineered the company’s comeback by honing Apple’s industrial design, tightly integrating software and hardware, and pushing into new markets.

The iPhone, introduced in 2007, has become Apple’s best- selling product and turned the company into the world’s biggest smartphone maker. After winning customers away from Research In Motion Ltd. and Nokia Oyj, Apple is now sparring with Google for leadership in the market for mobile-phone software.

“Under Steve’s leadership Apple has not only revolutionized the computer industry but also transformed how the world communicates, plays, shops and works,” said Frank Quattrone, CEO of Qatalyst Partners LLP, a Silicon Valley investment bank. “In the entrepreneur hall of fame, he is the charter member. He is, and will remain, an inspiration to the world.”

Cook joined Apple in 1998. As operating chief, his oversight included sales, manufacturing and distribution.

“The world will see in the next several years that Tim is a very uniquely gifted guy and Apple will be wildly successful under his leadership,” said John Connors, a venture capitalist at Ignition Partners, who serves on the Nike Inc. board with Cook.
